Hot Loop Canyon

Trailhead- Jacks Canyon Distance: 3.5 miles Duration: 3-4hrs+ Difficulty: Easy

A good beginner canyon within close proximity to Highway 17, making it an excellent candidate for a quick adventure before leaving town. The head of the technical section features an 85’ muilt-stage rappel down a broken coconino waterway. The remainder of the rappels are fairly short and underwhelming, but beginner friendly. The canyon itself holds some unique beauty for the area, including hidden petroglyphs and towering walls. On hotter days the canyon is well shaded, making this a worthwhile option for most of the year.

Rope: 1 x100’ + 1 x 100’ Pull Cord

Anchor Materials: 30’ of webbing + 3-4 rapides

Up to 4 rappels, 85’ max

Approach 1-2 hours

From Jacks Canyon Trailhead, follow social trails to the top of the mesa. Continue on the main trail eastward and you will eventually parallel the canyon on your left. Exit the trail on the left and hike a few hundred feet until you meet the main drainage. Take a left into the canyon and walk a short distance down to the first rappel.

Descent 1-2 hours

Competent down climbers can bypass a couple of the rappels.

The first rappel will require the most amount of rope and could take up to 90’+ depending on your anchor location. We chose a large pine, up, and out of the watercourse on the right side, near the edge.

Exit 1 hour

Immediately after the last drop, there is a worn social trail located up the hill on the left side. Follow the social trail back to the trailhead and your vehicle.
