Overview: A worthwhile option nestled in the back of Boynton canyon with an approach that is both challenging and rewarding, followed by a quick succession of 3 short yet engaging rappels. The location in the heart of Boynton, and low commitment make this an ideal link up with slingshot for a full value adventure. Overall this is a good route for beginner level adventurers with a solid leader. The technical section takes about as long as the approach and exit and is fairly short. The quality of the approach makes the overall route worthwhile. If I was introducing someone new to Sedona Canyoneering or Boynton Canyon, I would combine Slingshot and Ponderosa for an epic full day adventure. For smaller efficient groups, Ponderosa is a good little add on if you have extra time.

  • Low flash flood potential

  • Short technical section

  • Minimal bushwhacking

  • A convenient add on that is often less traveled

Approach: From Boynton canyon trailhead continue on Boynton Canyon trail past the Vortex and Enchantment resort. After passing the resort, the Boynton Island formation will hug the trail on the left side. The trail will start to bend left and there will be an obvious shaded clearing on the left with large boulders. This clearing serves as a good rest before starting the off trail approach as well as a landmark for the upcoming turnoff on your right side. Leave the trail crossing over a small wash and heading a short distance up an obvious, but shallow drainage. Watch out for sensitive terrain. Exit the drainage on the right or east side and gain the peninsula. The kml track will help keep you on the right path and next you will encounter a 20’ climb on good quality rock with large holds. Scramble the slabby sandstone ridge, stopping to wave at the tourist down at the Subway Cave down below. The approach gets a little brushy toward the end as you navigate from the peninsula to the large ponderosa at the head of the mini- canyon.

Descent: A few quick rappels under 100’ will land you in the bottom of Ponderosa.

R1: (A) 80’ off large tree at the head of the canyon.

(B) 60’ off tree LDC into a tight crack that opens up at the bottom. Thoughtful rope placement and equalizing the anchor will help prevent getting stuck in the crack.  It is recommended to hang your pack and to be prepared to get your partner un-stuck!

R2: 100’ off large dead alligator Juniper. This rappel will take every bit your 100’ rope. Trail rope to avoid trees below.

R3: 70’ off tree. Ruins and trees below.

Exit: Gear down after the last rappel and follow the drainage to the intersection with the main trail.
